Fake rock (water feature / pond construction)
Просмотров 32 тыс.11 лет назад
A quick compilation of pics and video showing how i built my " faux rock " pond / rock pool using the same method as in my other "how to" faux rock video. This is my first attempt at such a project. I recycled any old bricks, blocks, concrete fence posts, broken up concrete pathways and anything else i could lay my hands on in the process, including the little pond which was due to go to the dum...
Fake rock (lightweight, quick, simple)

This is my first attempt at making lightweight fake rocks. I wanted something quick and simple. I later used elements of this method to do my first ever fake rock project, a fake rock pond, a quick video of which can be seen here............. ruclips.net/video/AX2LckCk_Dk/видео.html

Main plants used..........Colocasia Mammoth ,Colocasia Dark Stem, Alocasia Calidora Colocasia Esculenta , Colocasia Gaoligongensis , Alocasia Macrorrhizos Other plants used Musella Lasiocarpa, Hedychium "Assam Orange" and some red geraniums for bedding.
Recycled greenhouse and shed project (December 2011)
Просмотров 7 тыс.12 лет назад
The aim of the project was to recycle an old shed and greenhouse that had both seen better days and make one larger greenhouse structure to overwinter some tropical plants. By relocating the new structure and removing about 10 conifers, it also opened up more gardening area. The trunks of the removed conifers were also recycled and i've started to make a pergola with them. Due to the now winter...

Very inspiring.
Thank you
One of my tree ferns seems healthy but it still has no new fronds starting to emerge from the crown. All yours look lovely and lush already. Amazing garden, just went back and watched all your videos.
Hi and thank you. Keep the trunk well watered. Now is the time that new fronds start emerging so i'm sure you'll be blessed with a new flush very soon
Did you paint it once it is dry?
Hi Coy, no it wasn't painted, just left to weather naturally which it does like real rock eg moss etc
Amazing! Thanks!
Thanks Barbara
I'd love to see another pic, I'm about to attempt the project myself
For a really nice natural look, paint some plain yogurt on the rocks here and there and a pretty moss grows
Thanks Rose. I've never tried the yoghurt method but my faux rock projects have aged naturally, plenty of moss etc . I wish i could put a pic up for you to see
I have above ground pipes and currently I have a poorly made wooden box covering them..would be nice to make one of these to cover the pipes for a more natural look. excited to try. Thanks for the videl
Hi Calina. Can't see a problem with what you want to do as long as you can still access them. I've done it with manhole covers. Good luck.
lol, you got the best idea to cover those ugly rocks with cement , can you share your mixture to get that texture ?
Hi SDQ , its just a normal 3 parts sand to 1 part cement with some liquid waterproofer and liquid colouring added at the time of the mix
I LOVE THIS.......GONNA TRY IT THIS WEEK END....:)
Have fun Susan
Hello! Fantastic garden! How is yucca rostrata in the moisture in the winter?
Hi. Its in a raised bed thats filled mostly with granite chippings, so the its very free draining
Questions....how do you cure it and do you remove the packing once it's hardened?
Hi Lisa , It sets like any mortar mix so generally the next day its ok to handle
Can I make plant pots with this cement/sand/waterproofer mixture? I am looking for a clay like cement mix for making my own plant pots..:) Thank You.
But you need holes at the bottom of the pots for water to escape. Too wet of the soil would cause the plant roots to rot. Cement/sand products are almost waterproof. Too make them completely water proof, you just need to paint them with cement paint (A liquid mixture of cement and water). I wouldn't make a pot out of cement/sand because it would be too heavy. If you make the walls too thin, and without wire frames, they break easily.
Very nice. Needed some different music to go with a tropical garden though.
How much does it weigh? "Lightweight" isn't exactly the best description.
It is hollow inside so, probably 20-30 pounds.
Its not heavy at all tbh Mika, probably 10lbs
Awesome!!! Great job!.. Now to convince my husband to make some for the yard. :)

Hi Tropical Taffy nice garden it must look totally different now, How well has your Jubaea grown.
Hi Jason. I had to move it last year but it didn't seem to effect it. They certainly put out some big fat roots very quickly. Hoping for some good growth this season , as its had to time to settle now
good video I plan to follow what you did. question: we live in cold weather [ snow in winter ] and wanted to know if the rock will hold up to the cold. appreciate it if you can advise me. thanksron
+Diane Lewis add some waterproofer to the mix to keep rain / moisture soaking in. When its cold / freezing, theres much less chance of expansion and the render cracking
I like this technique. No messing with chicken wire.
great! roughly what is total area of this pond (square meter) and how much actual material (mortar)it took to finish this project
+master strokes Pond is about 1.5m long and maybe 800mm wide. As a builder, i often have old bags of cement left over and i simply use those, so a bit difficult to quantify how much i've used. I would say that a wheel barrow of mortar goes a long way.
So how heavy was the finished product? I'd like to make a geocache hide like this, heavy enough to firmly stay put but light enough to flip over and find the cache.
will the color of the fake rock fade over time ?
Has anyone tried this so they can tell me how much it weighs?? I want to make rock that are pretty close to the size of basketballs tho.
+SashaWasHereToday Its surprisingly quite light, probs about a quarter of a same size genuine rock
how much cement and how much sand.dont understand 3:1 sand / cement
Estela Vargas 3 measures of sand to one measure of cement for example, 3 shovels of sand to one shovel of cement
I didn't see enough of the plastic bag texture work. No, just kidding, I saw plenty. But I'm wondering what the finished product weighs. A real rock that size would maybe weigh 150 lbs? I just bought a plastic rock that size for $27 and it weighs maybe 5 lbs. Anyway, that's a good-looking rock, I might try it.
It looks small, but if it was a real boulder, it would weight somewhere near to a hundred pounds. I could not pick up boulders that are one and half of that size from the ground. I can only pick them up if they were on a truck. Trust me, they would break anyone's back.
150 lbs boulder would be a little bigger than that.
What was the final weight?
Did you finish the bottom??
danessaartist no, i didnt think there was any need as it just sits on the soil and is hidden anyway
What a FANTASTIC job. Do you think someone could do this if they never worked with concrete before?
Janice Woods God aye........lol. Its like being back at playschool , messing about with soft clay and so what if it gets messed up, go over it and try again. Let your mind go blank and enjoy.p.s its not concrete, its ordinary 3:1 sand / cement mix ...........
p.s (again) this effort spawned my first fake rock project which may be of use to you as well............ ruclips.net/video/AX2LckCk_Dk/видео.html About to start a slighlty bigger pond / fake rock project shortly myself, got another load of rubble to use up so may as well put it to use and recycle it
Thank you, I am going to give it a try.
What type of concrete mix did you use? Hydraulic?
basic 3:1 mortar mix
Impressive job! Wish I had your ability to build.
Brilliant! Can I acheive this with al ightweight hypertufa coating?
Got a few friends who've done just that and it seems to be ok. Never tried hypertufa myself though
real nice
Is it possible to use a tripod for the camera work - or that special program that centers the scene.?
Richard Zito Hi Richard. Tbh it was a quick vid for some of my mates to see who then suggested i put it on You Tube as well, even though it was never meant for that and hence the very amateur camera work.
Hi thanks .. well get better at it then - you're worth watching with your good ideas and all. there are so many other vid's that'r just silly
Richard Zito Very kind of you to comment , Richard. Thanks.
how did you color the mortar to get the natural rock color
Hi Adam, i added some some yellow liquid mortar colouring at the mixing stage
Hi, I was wonder about the mesure of the rock? And how much sand and cement did u need to do it.
What type of cement was used exactly?
Ordinary portland cement. In fact , its usually the odd half a bag left over from other jobs and no longer any good for bricklaying, that would otherwise be skipped
What is the waterproofer?
Amazing work!
Ta muchly..............
Very clever. Also, mad skills. It looks amazing. How durable is it? Could you stand on it?
I've stood on both the polystyrene backed one's and the old concrete rendered one's without any problem. Wouldn't recommend doing it too often though
when you add the colorant and the water proofer you didn't say what ratio. Is the waterproofer that cylinder of adhesive, and do you add a lot to make the rock waterproof?
I just follow the manufacturers recommendations on the bottle / packet for each product. Being in construction ,we buy our waterproofer in larger quantities, so i just use that. Usually its no more than a capfull per bucket.
That was clever of you to do that for art's sake in your garden! I think they sell different coloured dyes for mixing with mortars and cement, don't they? So a rock can come in several (waterproof) colour shades. :)
You just saved me hundreds of dollars! Real rocks are a bloody fortune!!!
Check out Stonemakers.
Nice one.............saved myself a fortune on skips as well, as all the old concrete and bricks etc would have had to have gone to skips / local dump
That is a very lush garden. There is Bamboo in there and was that a Wandering Jew plant, among the masses of growth? I like the Agaves, Yuccas, Palms and Banana too. Did you have to go all the way to New Zealand, to get those tree ferns? I will have to watch more of your videos before asking lots of questions. Thanks
I like how you used chicken wire and mortar to hide the pond edge. Very creative. Did you use a sealant to stop the water rising between the mortar and the pond wall? Mortar doesn't like to stay stuck to plastic for a long period...
Hi. No , i deliberately didn't seal between the rigid pond liner and the fake rock for two reasons. Firstly to allow any excess water from rainfall etc to drain away and secondly to allow free movement should the liner sink a little due to weight or ground movement
Absolutely stunning. I'd be happy with a third of what you have there . Beautiful!!!
Thanks for the comment Mike and for taking the time to watch.
Thanks for sharing what a gem abit of everything,I would love you to post again at the end of the season..many thanks!!!!!!!
I will do my best and a big thanks for taking an interest.
Your garden looks absolutely wonderful.
Hi John, thanks once again for your kind comment
Wow, your garden is kick-ass! I'm loving it. It really looks good considering you just came out of winter. Great range of plants and very exotic looking.
Thank you Tom. Wouldn't it be a godsend if the winters were that mild every year...........
Hi, did your revoluta flush in 2013 too? Ive recently purchased one and would hate to have to wait for it to flush once evey two years like some people have to :-)
I was very fortunate last year as all my cycads flushed i.e 4 revoluta's, 1 circinalis and a rhumpii. Also got some good growth on a big Macrozamia moorei. With the mild winter we've had here so far, i can already see some of the cataphylls starting to move
Sounds promising, hopefully a warm summer this year to spark some growth. Say, you don't happen to be a member of hardy tropicals do you?
Could be .............lol
Fibre stripped my Trachy last year, they look so much more tropical in fact I think they look like a totally different species! The feather leaved palm is that a butia? mine died last winter, spear pulled out in spring and was completely water logged inside, are yours still alive? I live in Leeds, W Yorks and had a very mild winter so far, everything seems to have survived fingers crossed.
Agree, they do look very different when stripped. The feather palms are indeed butia, in fact they were odorata. Sadly both are no more and i put it down to the claggy brazilian soil that they rootball was encased in. Certainly wasn't down to cold imo. In hindsight, i wish i'd hosed it all off , i think they'd still be alive today. Keep telling myself to try again as they are stunning palms. Very mild here as well, pity about all the rain and wind but i guess we can't have it all our own way.
My Butia was Eriospatha, apparently hardiest of the Butias but they definitely don't like prolonged cold. They are beautiful palms but apparently the hardiest feather leaved palm is Jubaea chilensis which I might try this year. You have a truly stunning garden, I am very very jealous. Keep up the good work and I want an update on your garden this year lol.
lawn38 I planted a Jubaea last year, so hoping to see some growth this year. They are a slower grower though apparently
Beautiful!
Thanks
